COS Wool Coat: Shoulder, Length, and the Long Line

I tried the COS wool coat with the belt undone first. The shoulder is the fitting. If the seam sits past the bone, the long line everyone wants is just a big coat. I checked the seam in the side mirror before I looked at camel or black.

The sleeve ended at the wrist bone with a knit underneath. A bare wrist means the sleeve is short once a sweater goes on. I kept the knit on for every check after that.

Long, on this coat, means past the knee when I stand and still clear of the chair when I sit. I sat on the fitting-room bench. The hem rode up but did not pool on the seat. A coat that pools when you sit will drag on a wet commute.

The long COS wool is a column if the shoulder is quiet. I left the belt off. Tied, the belt cut the column at the waist and made the skirt of the coat swing. Untied, the front stayed closed with one button. That is the office version.

A commute coat has a different job. The wool coat for the commute needs a hem that clears a chair. Use that same sit test on the COS long. Do not buy length from a standing photo.

I walked with a bag on the shoulder. The bag strap sat on the coat, not under it. Under the coat, the strap pulls the shoulder seam back. Over the coat, the seam stays. That is a small check and it fails a lot of long coats.

Black hid the lint and showed the shoulder. In the black I could see the seam more clearly than in camel. If the black gaps at the chest when buttoned, it is small. I did not size up into a shoulder that slid off. I left the top button open.

Black with a black trouser disappears. I put a light knit at the neck so the coat had an edge. A scarf works if it stays inside the collar. A scarf that spills over the lapel makes the black coat look borrowed.

The black lining was smooth. I checked the armhole. A tight armhole in wool shows up after ten minutes, not in the first pose. I crossed my arms. The back did not pull. That passed.

Oversized is the trap. COS already cuts a relaxed shoulder. The oversized version added width at the sleeve and dropped the armhole. On me the armhole hit the bust. That shortens the torso. I sent the oversized back.

If you are tall and the regular long looks skimpy at the hem, the oversized may be your length. Still check the shoulder. Length you can tailor. A dropped shoulder you cannot put back on the bone.

Volume under the coat changes the size. A cropped jacket at the high waist fits under the COS long if the jacket ends at the waistband. A blazer with pads will fight the COS shoulder. Take the pads off or leave the blazer at the office.

I tried the coat over a dress and over trousers. The dress needed the hem of the coat longer than the dress hem, or the dress hem showing on purpose. Two hems at the same place look unfinished. Trousers were easier. The coat covered the seat of the pant.

Belt, button, and what I walked out in

I left in the camel long, belt in the pocket, one button, knit at the neck. The black was the cleaner shoulder but it ate the trouser. Camel showed the leg. That is the fitting-room reason, not a color trend.

Pockets were high enough for a phone without pulling the hem. Deep pockets on a long coat drag one side. I put the phone in and looked. The hem stayed level.

Is a COS wool coat warm enough for a commute?

With a knit, yes, on a dry day above freezing. It is not a padded coat. If you need wind blocked at the neck, button it and keep the scarf inside.

Should I buy the COS long wool or the oversized?

Buy the long if the shoulder sits on the bone. Buy the oversized only if the regular is short on you and the dropped armhole still clears the bust.

Camel or black COS wool coat?

Camel shows the trouser and the shoe. Black hides lint and lunch. Fit both. Keep the one whose shoulder is quieter.

Can I wear a blazer under a COS wool coat?

Only a soft blazer without pads. If the coat shoulder lifts when the blazer is on, the layer is wrong. Wear the knit and carry the blazer.

The coat stays if the shoulder is on the bone after you sit and the hem clears the chair. Color is the last decision.
