How to Clean White Sneakers Without Ruining Them
Most white sneakers are not ruined by dirt. They are ruined by the rescue attempt. Hot water, a washing machine, a magic eraser on coated leather, a hair dryer aimed at a wet toe cap. The pair comes back stiff, yellow, or both.

Clean by material. Then put them back under clothes. Outfit notes: how to wear white sneakers.
Sort the pair before you touch water
Smooth leather and coated leather want almost no water. Suede and nubuck are a different job. Canvas can take a little more agitation. Engineered mesh holds grit inside the knit; flooding it drives dirt deeper. If a shoe mixes leather overlays on mesh, clean the leather first so dye does not migrate.
Nike keeps a basic cleaning guide. Treat it as a ceiling, not as permission to throw everything in the washer.
You need a soft brush, a microfiber cloth, mild dish soap or a dedicated sneaker cleaner, paper to stuff the toe, and patience. Baking soda belongs on rubber midsoles, not on leather. Diluted white vinegar can help yellowed rubber if you test first. Bleach weakens fabric and leaves a halo. Magic-eraser pads dull coated leather. The dishwasher is not a tool.
Leather
Remove the laces. Dry wipe the dust. Mix a drop of soap in water and wring the cloth until it is almost dry. Small circles. The toe cap is where city film lives. Wipe again with a clean damp cloth. Air dry. If the leather looks thirsty, a tiny amount of colorless cream is enough. Colored polish turns a fashion sneaker into a painted object.
Canvas
Brush loose dirt outside. Work soap into a damp brush and lift the stain. Keep water out of the insole if you can. Rinse the brush, not the shoe under a tap. Stuff the toe. Room temperature only. Canvas that dries on a radiator warps and never sits flat again.
Knit and mesh
Dry brush first. Then a barely damp brush. Press, do not saw. Winter salt should come off the same day; salt eats the fiber. Dry with paper inside so the knit does not shrink into ridges.

Rubber midsoles accept a baking-soda paste and a firmer brush. Rinse the paste off the rubber, not into the upper. Outsoles can take an old dish brush outdoors. Dry the pair upright so water does not pool in the heel. Oxidation yellow is chemistry plus sun. You can improve it. You rarely return a three-year pair to factory white. Store them off a sunny shelf.
Laces can soak in soapy water. If they stay gray, replace them. The pair will look new for a few dollars. Pull insoles if they come out. A sour smell is bacteria in foam. Sun helps a little. A hot dryer helps until the foam dies.
Do not machine-wash glue-constructed lifestyle sneakers on hot. Do not use an oven. Do not bleach knit. Do not store damp pairs in a plastic box. A collapsed midsole is not a cleaning problem. That pair is done.
Once they are clean they can sit under jeans again. Cut guide: best jeans for women.
Can they go in the washing machine?
Only if the maker says so, on cold, in a bag, with no heat after. Most fashion leather pairs should stay out. When in doubt, stay out.
Why did the midsole yellow after I cleaned them?
Water plus leftover soap plus sun. Rinse residue off rubber. Dry in shade.
How often?
Wipe leather the day it gets film. Deep-clean when the toe cap is visibly gray, not because a calendar said so.
