Madewell Perfect Vintage Jeans: Rise, Hem, and the Straight Leg

I took the Madewell Perfect Vintage jean into the fitting room because the name promises a straight leg and the mirror does not always agree. The rise sat on the bone on the first button. The second button pulled. That is the whole fitting, before wash or review language gets a vote.

I stood sideways first. The waistband did not fold. The pocket opening stayed shut when my hands were empty and opened only when I put a phone in. A Perfect Vintage that gaps at the pocket is a size problem, not a styling problem.

Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans petite

The petite search is a length search. I asked for the shorter inseam and then checked the hem on a bare ankle, not on a sock. A petite Perfect Vintage should stop at the ankle bone in a flat and just kiss the top of a loafer. If the hem piles, it is the regular inseam, even if the tag says petite.

I sat. The rise stayed put. On a short rise the waistband dives when you sit and the shirt has to be retucked in the hallway. The petite length does not fix a low rise. It only shortens the leg. If the rise is right and the hem is long, a tailor can take an inch. If the rise is wrong, hemming will not save the pair.

The thigh on the petite was the same as the regular in my size. Madewell does not slim the thigh when it shortens the inseam. If the regular was tight through the thigh, the petite will be tight too. Size for the thigh, then confirm the hem.

Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans high rise straight leg

High rise straight leg is the cut I kept. The waistband met the narrowest part of the torso. The leg fell straight from the hip, not from the knee. A straight that narrows at the calf is a skinny with a new name. I checked the calf in the mirror with the foot flat.

The high rise only works if the top ends at the waistband. A cropped jacket that stops above the rise leaves a band of shirt. I buttoned a soft blazer and looked at the seam. The blazer hem covered the waistband. That is the office version.

A wider office pant is a different fitting. The high-waisted wide-leg trousers need a hem that clears the shoe. The Perfect Vintage straight can break once. Do not use the wide-leg hem rule on this jean.

I tried the black and the mid indigo. Black hid the pocket outline. Indigo showed the fade at the thigh, which is the point of a vintage wash. If the fade is already a hole, send it back. A Perfect Vintage should look worn, not broken.

Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans review

In the room the review is three checks. Rise on the bone. Straight leg that does not hug the calf. Hem that shows the shoe. Stretch is light. It does not recover like a jegging. If you need the waist to give an inch after lunch, this is the wrong jean.

The button fly is slower than a zip. I closed it twice. The top button should not gap. A gap means the rise is too low for your torso or the size is small. I went up one size and the thigh got loose before the waist closed. That is a cut mismatch, not a failure of the wash.

Blue jeans worn with a simple top, hem checked at the ankle

The shoe decides the hem. A leather loafer needs the last visible. If the jean covers the vamp, the straight leg reads as a pool, not a crop.

I walked the corridor. The hem did not catch the heel. The back rise did not drop. Those two walks are the review. A photo on the site cannot show the back rise. You have to sit and stand.

What I kept and what I sent back

I kept the high rise straight in the darker wash, regular inseam, because the petite stopped above the ankle bone and looked chopped with a boot. I sent back the cropped. The crop ended mid-calf and fought the straight line. A crop only works if you live in ankle boots and want the shaft fully out.

Pocket bags were deep enough for a card, not a phone on the light wash. I will not carry a phone in the front pocket of the pale pair. The outline is the first thing the mirror shows.

Are Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans petite shorter in the rise?

No. Petite shortens the inseam. The rise is the same pattern. Fit the waist first, then choose petite only if the hem piles on your ankle.

Do Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans run small?

The waist is true if the rise is right. The thigh is the tight point. If the thigh grabs, size up and belt, or leave the cut. Do not size down for a gap at the pocket.

Can I wear Perfect Vintage jeans to the office?

Yes, in a dark wash, with a tucked knit and a shoe that shows. Skip a ripped knee. The straight leg is the office part. The wash is the dress-code part.

Straight or wide leg if I already own barrel jeans?

Keep the straight if the barrel already covers volume. Two wide legs in one week is a closet repeat. The Perfect Vintage is the quieter denim next to a barrel.

The pair leaves the room when the rise stays put after you sit and the hem shows a shoe. Everything else is a wash preference.
